As discussions intensify around the world about easing lockdown restrictions, one question is on a lot of people’s minds – when will sport return? Now, in the grand scheme of things this is a very insignificant worry to have. However, sport is a big part of the day-to-day lives of billions of people around the world and we are eagerly anticipating the day that players can get back on the field, court or diamond. Of course we have had table tennis and Esports to keep us entertained over the last few weeks but that’s not enough for the mainstream. UFC 249 is here to deliver.
Many would say that UFC and MMA is not a mainstream sport but pay-per-view figures would tend to disagree. Dana White has pulled off a masterstroke by organising UFC 249 in Jacksonville, Florida on May 9th. Sports fans will be more than ready for some premier sporting action come May 9th and we have already seen plenty of action in the betting markets.
With that in mind, we have previewed some of next Saturday’s fights to give you the information you need to make your bets with CanPlay.
Francis Ngannou vs Jairzinho Rozenstruik
4:30AM (approx.) Sunday May 10th
The stakes are very high in this No.1 contender match in the heavyweight class. Rozenstruik is still unbeaten with a 10-0-0 record including an unexpected defeat of Alexander Overeem in his last bout. Cameroonian fighter Ngannou has been at the top of the rankings for many years and he seems primed and ready for another shot at the title.
Ngannou has scored three first round knockouts in his previous three fights and he is heavy favourite at -335 with CanPlay. Opponent Rozenstruik is an attractive +215 given his unbeaten record.
The next heavyweight title challenger will be the winner of this fight. Who will that be? It’s hard to say at the moment but experience means a lot inside the octagon and for that reason we’re backing Francis Ngannou to leave Florida with a victory and title shot.
Henry Cejudo vs Dominick Cruz
5:15AM (approx.) Sunday May 10th
The fact that this bantamweight title fight between Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz is not a main event shows the caliber of the fighters on show next weekend.
Again, the odds are heavily stacked in Cejudo’s favour with the current title holder available to back at -265 with CanPlay. Cruz is a bit of an unknown quantity. The 35-year-old has not fought since a championship loss to Cody Garbrandt in 2016. Does Cruz still have enough in the tank for a title bout? We don’t think so and we’re betting on Henry Cejudo to win by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje
6AM (approx.) Sunday May 10th
Dana White has said that next Saturday night’s main event will be one of the ‘most violent ever’. It has definitely attracted plenty of attention with the interim lightweight title up for grabs. The winner of this fight will go on to face to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title bout in the near future.
Just like the other fights we have a clear favourite in this bout. Tony Ferguson is unbeaten in his last 12 and CanPlay have listed him at -200 to win next weekend. Challenger Gaethje is +135 with CanPlay.
