It has been well documented that our live sports offering has taken a hit in recent weeks. While sport seems insignificant on the larger scale of everything that is happening in the world right now, it’s hard to ignore the sport-shaped hole in our day-to-day lives.
However, there is still some sport for us to savour and some sport that is available to bet on here with CanPlay. One of those sports is table tennis. In fact, the stars of the Ukraine’s Setka Cup and Russia’s Moscow Liga Pro have been pushed into the spotlight in the last few weeks.
Table tennis has been a favourite in the live betting markets for years now but it’s only thanks to the recent sports shutdown that casual bettors have taken an interest in the sport. Alongside table tennis, there has also been an increase in interest in Esports (see our NBA 2K Players Tournament Preview here), Darts (that is being played via videolink from each player’s home) and Ice Hockey.
Fixtures are being played on a daily basis in the Setka Cup and can be streamed live from the official Setka Cup website. You can also watch some of the older games if you want to get a bit of scouting in before making your bets.
There is a male and female section of the Setka Cup with games in both on a daily basis. The games are being played in one arena so the action is non-stop with back-to-back games from morning to night. Each game will be available to bet on with moneyline markets for each game. There is also plenty of live betting action to play too.
Similar to the Setka Cup, Liga Pro features some of the best table tennis players in the Eastern Europe region. With up to 30 games played every day, there is plenty to choose from here.
Usually this week in the sporting calendar is reserved for discussion surrounding the Masters which would have finished on the Sunday just passed. As well as that, this is traditionally the week when the NBA and Stanley Cup Playoffs begin and we would have Opening Day of the MLB season.
So, this year, instead of talking about Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Alexander Ovechkin or Mookie Betts, we’re becoming more familiar with players like Vasily Shurshov, Oleg Shagarov, Sergey Morozov and Vladimir Petrov of Moscow’s Liga Pro.
Sergey Kuzmin is perhaps the most high-profile player in the league although it must be said that none of the players rank in the top 50 in the world.
If you, like many others, are new to table tennis then here’s a quick explainer of the rules.
The winner of the match is the first to three games. Each game is played on a first to 11 points basis with each winning shot scoring one point. Each game must be won by two points so the game continues until that has been settled i.e. we could see a final score of 20-18. The serving player changes every two points.
