We’re approaching the 50-game mark of the NHL season and we are still waiting for one team to truly separate themselves from the rest of the pack. The Washington Capitals have been most impressive with 33 wins to their name but Stanley Cup odds of +850 shows that they have not convinced the bookmakers just yet.
CanPlay have the Tampa Bay Lightning (+750) and Boston Bruins (+800) listed as favourites. Those sides are second and first respectively in the Atlantic Division.
There is still plenty of time to make up ground with just over two months remaining of the NHL regular season.
Detroit Red Wings @ Colorado Avalanche
20th January 2020 3PM
Detroit hosts the Colorado Avalanche for the early game on Martin Luther King Day.
The Avalanche made a big statement in their last performance on Saturday. They beat reigning Stanley Cup champions and Central Division rivals St. Louis Blues 5-3. That win inches them closer to the Blues in the standings.
They will come up against significantly weaker opposition on Monday afternoon. The Red Wings are rock bottom of the league with only 12 wins to their name. They have lost their last four in a row and have conceded a whopping 189 goals in 49 games.
It’s no surprise then that we’re tipping the Avalanche to win this one. There could be an avalanche of goals too with the Red Wings leaky defense on show. Colorado Avalanche (-1.5) at -131 looks a good bet with CanPlay. Cale Makar has been setting records with his goalscoring this season. Back the young defenseman to score anytime at +260 with CanPlay.
Las Vegas Golden Knights @ Boston Bruins
21st January 2020 7PM
These sides play their last games before the All-Star break on Tuesday night. The Bruins are in rude health. They lead the Atlantic Division by six points and have a nine day break to look forward to before travelling to face the Winnipeg Jets.
In contrast, the Golden Knights are experiencing turmoil for their first time in their short life. They reached the Stanley Cup Finals in their first year and suffered an untimely loss in the Playoffs last year. This season they have dropped to fifth place in the Pacific Division and just sacked Coach Gerard Gallant.
How will that affect the team? Will it galvanize them? Or will this be their first season without a playoff appearance?
They are very talented on offense with Reilly Smith, Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty and Jonathan Marchessault aiming for 20+ goals this season. They will come up against a formidable defense with Marc-Andre Fleury minding the Boston goals.
The Bruins are the favourites and we fancy them to go into the break with a win. Back Boston with CanPlay.
Winnipeg Jets @ Carolina Hurricanes
21st January 2020 7PM
The Jets make the long trip south to face the Hurricanes on Wednesday night. These sides look pretty evenly matched on paper and we could be in for an exciting clash on Tuesday night.
These sides faced each other on December 17th with the Hurricanes coming out on top. Sebastian Aho scored twice as the Hurricanes won out 6-3.
A similar scoreline could be on the cards on Tuesday night too. The Hurricanes are 16-8-1 at home with Teuvo Teravainen and Aho being their standout performers.
The Jets have won 25 of their 49 games but have lost two in a row. Kyle Connor has been their star player with 47 points.
Overall, we’re tipping the Hurricanes to get the win on home ice. Back them with CanPlay.
