What is the NFL Spread
When betting on NFL games you can bet on a team to “beat the spread.” This means that if your team is the favorite they must win by more points as outlined by the spread and conversely if your team is the underdog they can still lose the game but if they lose by less than the spread your bet wins.
How to Understand the Point Spread on NFL Games
For example, if you take two teams say Detroit @ Philadelphia you can bet on a team winning outright (money line) or on a team to beat the spread.
|Detroit||+7 -111||+255||O 47.5 -111|
|Philadelphia||-7 -109||-320||U 47.5 -109|
In this example, the spread is + or – 7 points.
So, Philadelphia must win by more than seven points (they must win by 8 points to beat the spread) and Detroit can lose by six points and still beat the spread.
The Difference in Prices – NFL Spreads
We see in this example that Detroit are -111 to beat the spread and +255 to win outright. Conversely, Philadelphia are -109 to beat the spread but are -320 to win outright.
The reason for this is that Detroit are more likely to beat the spread than to win outright. And on the flip side, Philadelphia is less likely to beat the spread than to win outright.
Making Games More Interesting
All in all, betting on the spread as opposed to the money line does make games more interesting. Even in a competitive league like the NFL.
If a team shows improvement that you believe is not priced into the spread then you have the option to bet on it. Even though, you believe that the team will not win the game outright.
