March is always a strange time for NBA betting and our form last week showed just that. We came out on the wrong side of the result with all three of our picks (Portland, Denver and Utah) on the losing side.
The final full month of the regular season always brings about results that go against the formbook. The teams that have already secured their playoff spot start preparing (resting) ahead of their playoff run while the franchises that are already out of the playoff running start playing with no pressure.
This week, we have already seen the Knicks beat Houston at Madison Square Garden, the Charlotte Hornets beat the Toronto Raptors and the Minnesota Timberwolves defeat Miami Heat.
Los Angeles Clippers @ Houston Rockets
5th March 2020 @ 8PM
The Houston Rockets will look to bounce back from a surprise defeat to the Knicks on Monday night. They couldn’t face much tougher opposition to do that than the Los Angeles Clippers on a 5-game winning streak.
At this late stage of the season, every win is crucial. A victory for the Rockets here would put them just one win behind the Clippers in the Western Conference standings.
The newly-dubbed Pocket Rockets have performed well since they implemented their small-ball line-up. The Rockets have won 10 of their last 13 and 7 of their last 8 at home. James Harden is averaging 34.9 points and 7.4 assists while Russell Westbrook is averaging 27.5 points and 7.1 points-per-game. That backcourt pairing will cause problems for any side including Thursday night’s opponents.
We think the Rockets will be out to make a statement tonight. You can back Houston with a one point advantage at -112 with CanPlay. If you’re a bit more confident then you can back them in the moneyline at -110.
Utah Jazz @ Boston Celtics
6th March 2020 @ 8PM
The Jazz continue their Eastern Conference roadtrip with a visit to TD Garden on Friday night. It has been a successful journey so far with two wins against the Cavaliers and the Knicks. That pair of victories has lifted them to 5th in the West with a 39-22 record.
The Celtics have a 42-19 record and sit in 3rd in the East. This is the second time this franchises have met in just over a week. Boston emerged victorious at the Vivint Smart Home Arena on the 26th February on a scoreline of 105-114. All five starters reached double digits in the points category for the Celtics that night with Jayson Tatum finishing with 33 points and 11 rebounds.
A repeat of that scoreline is not out of the question here. The Celtics have one of the best home records in the league. Back Boston to win with CanPlay.
Milwaukee Bucks @ Los Angeles Lakers
6th March 2020 @ 10:30PM
The two leading teams in the NBA go head-to-head on Friday night at the Staples Center. The Bucks lead the league with 53 wins while the Lakers lead the Western Conference with a 47-13 record.
If the sportsbooks are correct, this will be our Finals pairing in June. The Bucks are the favourites for the Larry O’Brien Trophy at +225 while the Lakers can be backed at +275 with CanPlay. This game will also the MVP favourites match-up against each other. Giannis Antetokounmpo is likely to pick up his second award in a row while LeBron James is aiming to collect his fifth MVP award this season.
Looking ahead to the game – we fancy the Lakers to get one over on their Eastern Conference rivals. The Bucks have taken their foot off the gas since the All-Star break, losing two out of their last ten. The Lakers have only one blemish on their record over the same period – a surprise defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies. Back LeBron & Co. to pick up the win with CanPlay.
