After midweek Carabao Cup action the Premier League is back with a full slate of weekend fixtures. Have a read of our tips and predictions for games involving title challengers Liverpool and Manchester City.
Aston Villa v Liverpool, 10AM Saturday 2nd November
The last time these teams met at Villa Park in the league, the visitors’ starting XI contained the likes of Simon Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Alberto Moreno and Mamadou Sakho. And yet they still won 6-0.
There has been a lot of changes at both clubs in the intervening three and a half years, with none of Villa’s starting XI that miserable February day still at the club.
Pool have won their last five games at Villa, conceding only one in the process and we can’t see past that run continuing on Saturday. A Liverpool win to nil comes in at a reasonable enough +135. A 6-0 repeat is a rather whopping +5050, should you fancy it.
Jurgen Klopp’s team haven’t exactly being blowing teams away on the road in the league, though, scoring only four in their last three away trips. Conversely, Dean Smith’s men have only conceded three in their last four home games. This could be a tighter game than many predict. Prior to that 6-0 drubbing, Liverpool’s previous three visits here ended 0-1, 0-1, 0-2. We quite fancy the latter at about +725, while a 1-0 away win is +875 with CanPlay.
As for goalscorers, it’s hard to find value with Liverpool’s front three. However, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has netted three goals in his last three appearances and has taken Klopp’s advice to take more shots from long range to heart. The England midfielder is +850 to open the scoring on Saturday and +260 to find the net at anytime.
Manchester City v Southampton, 10AM Saturday 2nd November
After the 9-0 capitulation to Leicester City last Friday, Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City in the Carabao Cup almost came as a bit of a relief to a beleaguered Southampton.
Unfortunately for them, they meet again on Saturday in the Premier League – the top flight’s top scorers against the side who’ve conceded more than anyone. In fact, Southampton have 25 goals against – the same as Liverpool, City and Leicester combined. It’s all set up for plenty more goals at the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola’s side have scored 17 goals in their four home league games this campaign, conceding only two in the process. The Saints, though, have scored in their last seven away days in all competitions and we fancy both teams to score again in this one at +120 or +140 if you include a home win.
Meanwhile, a City win and Over 3.5 Goals can be backed at -155 with CanPlay. We’re plumping for a 4-1 win here at a decent looking +1325.
Sergio Aguero grabbed a brace in Tuesday’s meeting and he’s -245 to score first on Saturday afternoon. If you’re looking for better value, Phil Foden also started their midweek clash and he’s netted late goals in two recent wins. It’s the sort of match that Guardiola tends to give the youngster game time in and we like the look of +900 for him to score last in this one.
